Jewellery Design

Over recent weeks bëuy’s Crest collection lookbook has been getting a bit of attention. Frankie, Studio Home and Lady Smaggle are all loving the Marie-Antoinette inspired shoot that we produced for the label.  We’re totally chuffed with the results too and thought we’d share some behind the scenes pics from the day of the shoot.

Working on lookbook shoots is lots of fun but  there’s a lot of planning and preparation that goes on before the big day. Luckily we had a super-awesome team onboard to pull the whole thing together, with stunning results. Major kudos to photographer, Alexandrena Parker; Stylist, Jam Baylon; makeup artist, Dana Leviston and hair stylist, Anna Pontonio. Also a major big thanks to the gorgeous Lyn Gardener who let us use her stunning home for the shoot.

Last night, the Tribe Katalyst team popped along to the opening of Edition X, a very exciting new concept store from Melanie Katsalidis, the design and business wonderwoman behind Pieces of Eight. The premise of Edition X is to offer exclusive commissioned, limited edition works with a focus on presenting the ‘affordable collectable’, ranging from jewellery, textiles and books to sculpture and works on paper.

One of the artists featured at the launch was our very own Taë Schmeisser. Her Trash & Treasure collection for Edition X continues her exploration of the urban landscape featuring her signature wheelie bin necklaces with a new twist in the form of flashes of neon colour. It’s also a little hint at what’s to come from her new label bëuy, which we are super excited to be launching very soon.

We had a fab time at the opening, munching on Edition X’s custom cupcakes and admiring the gorgeous work on display. If you haven’t already, we highly recommending checking out the Edition X showroom or online shop. It could be the perfect place to do some Christmas shopping, that is if you can avoid wanting it all for yourself!

DJ Decks Cuffs

Way back in October last year I met two lovely ladies by the names of Ali & Kirsty Hamson at the first Melbourne Finders Keepers market. Ali & Kirsty are better known as the sister duo behind Melbourne-based cufflink label, Cuff Off. When I met them they were just starting out with the business and were not at the stage of outsourcing communications or sales. Anyway luckily for us here at Tribe Katalyst,  things are going so well with the label that they’ve called on us to help them out in both areas!

Keep your eyes peeled to their website as they regularly add new styles to their ever-expanding offering of classic and novelty cufflinks. And how cool are they?? Pictured here are two of my faves . . .

She is also tres talented to boot, making some of the most unique jewellery pieces in the biz!

Way back in  2008 I found myself at the NMIT silversmithing advanced diploma graduate show, checking out the work of  jewellery design’s freshest talent. It was here that I fell in love with the work of  Taë Schmeisser. For me, Taë’s work stood out in the crowd, a combination of precise technical skill and playful concepts.  I mean sterling silver wheelie bins!! Who would have thought? I remember staring at her ‘Airport Scene Scape’ and thinking, “I want to work with this girl!!”

And sure enough 3 years later here I am, working with Taë on her new venture – a jewellery label that is going to knock your socks off! Keep tuned peeps. Taë is going to be big. You heard it here first!

Several moons ago I stumbled upon some  truly gorgeous  jewellery pieces at Alphaville. I fell in love with the cute and quirky rings and earrings adorned with charms, much like what you find on a small child’s bracelet –  a cathedral, a Cinderella slipper, a horse and its foal, a bicycle, a double decker bus. At the time I didn’t know that these pieces were the work of  Hannah Ren for her label, 100s and 1000s. One thing I did know was that they were fab!

Anyway as luck would have it, fate had its way and brought Hannah and myself  together only a short time ago.  Imagine my delight when I found out that Hannah was the creator of the much admired Fairytale Collection. Let’s just say I was more than chuffed when Hannah decided to let us represent her. Indeed.

In Year 5, he made T-shirts. In high school, he started a graphic design business. He was named arts captain at a secondary college famed for its art program.

And then one day, it was suggested he try making jewellery. So he taught himself. Now  three years later, he has a well-known jewellery label.  And Brent Dakis, who you might call an overachiever, is the ripe old age of 23.

There was a clear and understandable force driving Brent’s entrepreneurial spirit: fear of a boring desk job and a career he didn’t believe in. ”I never want to do something I don’t enjoy. A lot of people are afraid of leaving the safety of what they’re doing to try something better. I’m the reverse. I’m afraid to work somewhere I don’t want to.”

So, how does one teach themself to be a jeweller?  In the beginning Brent did time gazing at other people’s jewellery, wishing he was that good but the lament was never strong enough to stop him from trying. Fear of failure, a nasty hang-up that torments many creatives, has never been an issue for Brent.

Lots of exciting developments are currently happening at Tribe Katalyst. One I can let you all in on is that I am lucky enough to have the highly talented Ms Amy Carmichael come onboard as a contributor to the Tribe Katalyst blog.

Amy is a freelance  writer and transplanted Canuck who now calls Australia home. After falling in love with an Aussie boy she then went on to fall in love with our sunburnt country!  After making the big move she co-wrote ‘Every Last Drop’, a book about drought in Australia and how we can all save lots of water.

In her first post for Tribe Katalyst, Amy gives her take on Melbourne’s first Finders Keepers market . . .

We went deep into Frankie territory at Melbourne’s first  Finders Keepers market  on the weekend . . .

I kind of felt like I knew everyone there. Call it the sisterhood of the crafty pants. It was like a giant kitchen tea in a metal and concrete shed at the Docklands. Talented vendors managed to make the hanger-like space cozy, lining it with with handmade blankets, mobiles, jewellery, stationary, dresses, fascinators, tea towels, pillowcases, bespoke wallpaper and so much more.

I think it’s fair to say this market had everything a girl could want: a bar, comfy vintage couches, cute boys in plaid shirts, horn rimmed glasses and not-too skinny jeans.

The kitchen was serving pumpkin and chick pea salad with coriander-yogurt dressing. There were bands channeling Angus and Julia Stone. And shopping like you would not believe.

Here is just a selection of my highlights . . .

Tinker by Printink Studio

All who nipped into the birthplace of the Collingwood Football Club, the Grace Darling Hotel, to pray, commiserate, stand watch and finally celebrate, would have noticed the wallpaper. Printink Studio created a deco ship and anchor pattern with a vintage tattoo feel especially for the hotel.  In addition to wallpaper the studio prints  fabrics and  creates childrenswear, fashion accessories and home furnishings.

Sunday Morning Design

“Normally we wouldn’t work on a Sunday,” says artist Jitske Wiersma. Understandable – this design group makes the softest pillowcases bearing dreamy illustrations which practically beg to be cuddled. I had a strong urge to procure one and curl up with in a sunny spot while listening to that poetic song by the Velvet Underground.

Sunday Morning Designs is a collaboration between Melbourne artists Lichen Kemp and Jitske Wiersma. The distinctive fine line illustrations featured on many of the products (screenprinted clothing, vintage fabric scarves, silver jewellery and stationery and pillow case sets), are by Lichen’s partner Dylan Martorell. And, Jitske says a doona cover is in the works!

Gretchen Hillhouse Design

Gretchen Hillhouse’s porcelain flowers make any wall look lovely. They shimmer when they hold a tea candle. They are divine on wedding tables. And they provide a delicate touch to a dinner party. Gretchen loves to uses them to serve food – especially Japanese. Also keep your eye out for her fabulously unique jewellery made from Australian porcelain.
